Old Style Splined Gimbal Rings V.S. the New Square Hole Gimbal Rings

If you have an older gimbal housing you may have a splined upper gimbal ring and steering shaft.
Many pre-Alpha units used this splined gimbal ring.
There were basically two types of old splined-style gimbal rings.
Very early units (like the old 1970 Model 165) did not have the side mounted trim sender switches.
They use "press-in" hinge pins which were locked into place with aluminum cross-nails.
These early gimbal rings had a trim limit switch at the very top of the gimbal ring.
The original gimbal ring part number was 45515A2 but this has superceded a few times to a new part number.
The new part number is 87356A1 Gimbal Ring Kit. Fits Model 888 drives.

Gimbal Rings with Trim Senders and Threaded Hinge Pins (splined)

Mercruiser soon came out with the Trim Senders mounted on either side of the Gimbal Ring.
The Hinge Pins were threaded into the Bell Housing v.s. the older style which used press-in pins.
The early Gimbal Rings still used a splined upper steering shaft hole.
Deemed unsafe if worn out this type of splined gimbal ring was soon changed.
The original part number for the gimbal ring was 77124A2 but has been changed to the Kit.
The new Gimbal Ring Kit is part 88302A1 Gimbal Ring Kit.

Alpha One Gimbal Rings

Later model MR and Alpha One Gimbal Rings used a square hole in the gimbal ring
as well as a square hole in the steering arm (square/square).
Always replace the gimbal ring as a set with the upper steering shaft.
If your Alpha One gimbal ring has play in the top hole it must be replaced.
Never use the boat if you have any play in the upper steering shaft and/or gimbal ring.
If you are replacing your gimbal ring be sure to replace the upper shaft as well.

High Performance Bravo Gimbal Ring Conversion Kits

These Bravo High Performance Bravo Gimbal Ring Kits have heavy duty stainless hinge pins.
The Kit converts your stock gimbal to a High Performance Gimbal
This is recommended for engines in excess of 380HP.
Kit includes Gimbal Ring, Bell Housing, HD Hinge Pins, and misc parts.
You can not install Trim Senders on these gimbal rings.

Complete Gimbal Ring Kit 822374A6 has been discontinued. Instead, order 8M0061384 for $ 2,450.00
